History about Tekat Perak

Tekat is categorized under textile that is made by sewing gold thread on velvet material. It is also termed as suji timbul, or embossed embroidery or tekat bersuji. Nevertheless, suji is often associated with the embroidery of silk thread. The origin and use of started approximately the same time as that of songket. Judging from the basic material used, example like gold thread, velvet material and also its design, this assumption can be accepted. Tekat is often made into clothing and finished product which mostly flourish in the palaces. Tekat on silk, cotton or velvet was not popular among the Malays especially during the fall of the Malacca Sultanate. Tekat art spread to the community outside the palace where it is done during one’s leisure time. Tekat requires patience and takes a long time to complete. Therefore, it is done gradually and slowly. For example, betrothed girls will prepare the articles they need for their wedding such as embroidery for the dais, pillow cases, bed sheets, fans, shoes, etc. The function of tekat is very limited. It is only used for ceremonial purposes or during a specific function. It is used at weddings, marriage proposals, birth, at the conclusion of the Quranic studies, etc. Among the royal family, tekat is considered as part of their official dress and everyday ornament. Not many people can afford to use as the basic materials required to make it are expensive.
